Lenten Devotional Day Thirty-Nine
Today I want to reflect on a perfect summation from John Stott, a beautiful song by Jess Ray, and Paul’s guidance about how to celebrate communion.
The essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man. — John Stott
Jess Ray’s Humble Heart anticipates the healing that can take place over bread and wine. Christ’s body broken was for us, His blood spilled to set us free.
Here is a link to Jess Ray performing the song. Here is a link for just the lyrics.
The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23b-25
Digging Deeper:
How does the celebration of communion help you reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross?
How might you explain John Stott’s quote above to an unbelieving friend?
