I had a pretty magical day today. I went to early morning Bible study and then I went to Chick-Fil-A and enjoyed a rainbow along with my chicken biscuit. God is good.
But it got even better at lunch when I had the following conversation with a five-year-old boy.
“Can you open this for me?” he said, handing me his water bottle. I opened it and then he trotted away to refill it.
“Can you watch my lunch and make sure it doesn’t go bad?”
I agreed.
When he got back from refilling, with genuine concern, he asked, “Did you watch my lunch? Did it go bad?”
“No,” I said, “It didn’t go bad.”
“Are you sure? It didn’t go bad?” he confirmed.
I wondered if the poor little guy has experienced food poisoning or witnessed it or what. But I didn’t ask.
A few minutes later the sun began to feel oppressively hot. So I told my new friend that I was going to go over to the shade. “Whew, I’m hot,” I said.
He confirmed, “You’re hot?”
“I am,” I said.
“Are you smokin’ hot?” he asked.
I’m not even sure how I answered, how I kept from busting out laughing. I think I just restated that I was hot.
He then untucked a frozen plastic pineapple thing from underneath his bento-style lunch box like a little gentleman. “If you are smokin’ hot you need this,” he said. “Put it up against your face,” he kindly offered.
I don’t know if you love kids, but I love it that my Savior did and does. His disciples thought maybe He was too busy to dedicate attention to little ones, but He cleared things up right quick.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19: 14.
Don’t you love it that delighting in innocent, hilarious children is one way to emulate Jesus? Our world may not cherish childhood but we must because children reflect the kingdom of heaven.
Digging Deeper:
How are you or how can you invest in the next generation? Have you experienced the truth that it is more blessed to give than receive in this realm?
What aspect of the kingdom of heaven belonging to children do you think applies to your own life? In what ways do we as adults need to be more childlike?
So sweet! And hilarious 😂
